If a person dies without leaving a legal Will, the law says their estate must be shared out according to a set of rules.
These are called the rules of intestacy. Under the rules:
Only married or civil partners and some other close relatives can inherit.
unmarried partners, relations by marriage, close friends and carers cannot inherit
If there are no surviving relatives the estate passes to the Crown.
